Course
You see with overwhelming clarity that your only real asset is time. You realize that you are voting for the wrong party. You spontaneously call your mother. You rush home, and with your coat still on, you write the first lines of the book that has been spinning around in your head for years. You realize that there is no good war and no bad peace. These are some of the conceivable reactions when exposed to a powerful work of art.
With the courage of a seasoned artist, during the course of Photography as Art we will for once set the bar high. We want to create photographs that are not necessarily aesthetically pleasing, but moves the viewer.
We are totally not going to talk about ISO and aperture, and as little as possible about line and point of view. Instead, let’s talk about topics that you are endlessly passionate about. Let’s be adventurers for a few months: we will explore faraway places, deep within ourselves, and come back with treasures the world has never seen before. The treasures that only you can gift to us.
This is not a “learning course”. So what can you expect? To paraphrase JFK, “Ask not what your course can do for you, ask what you can do for your course.” Because in this course, you are arguably the most important part. Your insights, ideas, opinions, experiences are the cogs of the gear wheel that will make the course turn.
This isn’t going to be a yada-yada-yada course about “search for myself,” “harmony with the universe,” “best version of me,” or anything like that, where photography is eventually pushed into the background and we lose sight of our original goal. There must be some kind of structure, even if it is as tender as the knees of an elderly butterfly. So it will be a yada-yada-yada course where we slowly but surely identify, filter and crystallize relevant thoughts, and transform them into the pictures that will communicate your message to the world in a spirited way.
